News literacy is a very important aspect of journalism today. Fact checking and citing sources is very important, along with addressing both sides of a story in order to display little to no bias. In my AP Government & Politics class, a discussion-based course, we constantly have to read articles and keep up with the latest news surrounding the government. With this year being an election year, it has been very crucial to pay attention to the news. As a journalist, I am expanding my knowledge always and paying attention to the news is a must. It's interesting to be able to spot political ideologies leaking through the press and somewhat biased writing during this time of contention.
In my Mother Emanuel story, I was compelled to go downtown and witness the memorial for myself because of how global the news went. It occurred basically in my back yard and my journalistic nature motivated me to report on it and take pictures.
A quote that stuck with me from a pastor speaking at the Mother Emanuel AME church two days after the shooting had occurred. He was commenting on the journalistic impressions this tragedy had made.
He said: "Don't give attention to the negative. Pay attention to the truth."
As journalists, paying attention to the truth is our responsibility.
